PS2 vs. GameCube (cont.)

Action/Adventure
This has to be the biggest genre, so therefore, this is where the competition is fiercest.  Let's begin by looking at how PS One and N64 rank in this category.  I don't think anyone will dispute that PSX has the honors for the best action game (and my choice for best game ever).  I'm of course talking about Metal Gear Solid, which is backed up by great titles like the Syphon Filter games, Medal of Honor, and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver.

So how does N64 look here?  Not quite as good.   Nintendo takes the cake in the adventure part of this genre with the awesome Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which has supposedly been improved upon by Majora's Mask (I wouldn't know, not having played it).  But aside from that, there's a bit of a gap here.  WinBack was fun, as well Rainbow Six, but that's about it.  Most of Nintendo's action games actually fall more into the 1st-person shooter genre.

How about looking to the future?  Well, we don't know much about GameCube's lineup, but PS2's looks quite promising.   Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is by far the most anticipated, with Zone of the Enders not far behind.  But don't forget about Syphon Filter 3, Soul Reaver 2, or Eden.  With these games and many others already in the works, PS2 seals the deal.

Predicted Action/Adventure Winner: Playstation 2

Shooter
I love my PSX, but it falls short here, and I know it.  Granted, PS2 gives us the amazing TimeSplitters, but that's just one to Nintendo's many.  Playstation's other shooters, like Quake II and Einhänder, are good, but they just can't stand up to the competition.

Speaking of the competition, what does Nintendo have to offer that makes them better than Sony?  Well, Rareware did most of the work here, with the outstanding games Perfect Dark and Goldeneye 007.  Add to that the Turok series and the N64 renditions of the Quake games, and you can see why this genre is, in my opinion, the jewel in Nintendo's crown.

Now, PS2 does show some promise for the coming year, with Red Faction and Quake III Arena.  But no matter how hard Sony works, I just don't think they'll be able to de-throne Nintendo.

Predicted Shooter Winner: GameCube

Racing
Both companies have A LOT of great racing games.  Nintendo has the Cruis'n, Rush, and F1 games. PSX has the Need for Speed series, Formula 1 games, and, of course, Gran Turismo and GT2.   And it's the Gran Turismo games alone that put Playstation ahead in this category.  GT, GT2, and now the upcoming GT3 have all been hailed as the greatest racing game ever at the time of their release.  How can you say no to that?

Predicted Racing Winner: Playstation 2
