PS2 vs. GameCube

It's All About the Games
By Wolf

Overview
Ah, the old debate.  PS2 vs. GameCube, Sony vs. Nintendo, the clash of titans.  I know I've been through this arguement plenty of times.  You've heard it all before, people going on about graphics engines and anti-aliasing and whatnot.   Well, to tell you the truth, I couldn't care less about that crap.  There's one issue in my mind: How are the games???

Yes, that's right, it's all about the games.  I already know for a fact that the PS2's graphics are freaking fantastic.  Of course, systems in the future will improve upon those graphics, but that's not in itself enough of a reason to warrant choosing one console over another.  The only graphical advancement that could ever be that important was the jump from 2D to 3D.  When the graphics already look this sweet, the games are factor number one.  So let's check 'em out.

I know what you're thinking (OK, maybe you're not thinking it, but I know I would be): How can you compare the games when the GameCube isn't out yet?  Well, I have my means.  So stay with me on this.

Mixed Blessing
First, let's talk about the games that are already out on the PS2.  It's kind of hard to make any predictions from this, with the games in the PS2 launch lineup being pretty much a mixed bag.  There were the amazing games (SSX, TimeSplitters, Tekken Tag, etc.), the flawed-yet-solid games (Summoner, X Squad, Kessen, etc.), and the disappointments (Evergrace, Orphen, etc.).  And let's not forget Gradius III and IV, which falls into the "why the hell is a 2D shooter in the PS2 launch lineup?" category.

Like I said, it's hard to make a prediction.  So instead, we must look to the either the past, and compare PS One games to N64 games, or to the future, and make judgements based on games that are in the works.  I intend to do both of these things, genre by genre.  Read on.
