Summoner Review (cont.)

Story
Story is an important aspect in most RPGs, and most people agree that Summoner's story is quite good.  I'm not one for giving it away, so I'll just give a brief rundown of what you know about the plot before it really begins.

Basically, Joseph, the main character, was born with the "mark of the Summoner."   Ooooo, mysterious.  As a child, he summoned a demon to protect his hometown, and the demon destroyed it (oops).  As the game begins, he's living happily in a new village, which has just been attacked by the opposing country of Orenia, and the attacking troops are looking for him because of his Summoner-mark thingy.  Things take off from there, and there's the appropriate twists and treachery along the way.  Most people don't want much more in a game's story.

I'm generally not picky in this department, but I do have one complaint.   It's not with the story itself, but with the way it's told.  The people you talk to have boring dialogue, devoid of realistic tone to the writing or any humor whatsoever.  I didn't think I cared about this sort of thing, but playing Summoner taught me that I actually do.   It's not a big complaint, but enough to bring the score down half a point.

Story Score: 4.5 out of 5.0

Sound/Music
To tell you the truth, this is the thing I care the least about in a video game (hence its place as the last section of this review).   But, I figure I'd better still touch on it for those of you who care.   I'm not exactly the best authority on this subject, the only thing I care about is that John Madden doesn't get to speak (which of course isn't a problem here).  What I can tell you is that the music sets does a good job of setting the mood, and the sounds are nicely done as well.  Why did I feel Summoner shouldn't get a perfect sound/music score?  Well, I think other games have done better, and that's about all you can get me to say on this subject.

Sound/Music Score: 4.5 out of 5.0

Overall
Having taken a long, hard look at Summoner, only one thing remains.  How does it all come together?  Quite nicely.  The solid gameplay and interesting story kept me wanting to play, despite the camera and pop-up problems.  I sincerely hope Volition and THQ try for a sequel, because if they can work out the graphical and camera issues, they could have a truly excellent game on their hands.

Overall Score: 4.0 out of 5.0
